Shooters Hill an elevated area to reside
Our focus area, Shooters Hill, is a district in South East London within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Home to ancient woodlands and one of the highest points in the borough at 132 metres, Shooters Hill offers stunning views across parts of Greenwich to the spectacular towers of Canary Wharf.
Shooters Hill was first recorded in 1226 and most likely derives from using the slopes for archery practice. However, Shooters Hill's history reaches much further back, and it is home to one of the few remaining ancient deciduous forests in Eltham. Some parts date back over 8,000 years to the end of the last Ice Age.
This area is famous for its fantastic landscape views of London and was notorious for being a dangerous route to navigate for travellers. The solitude and the thickness of ancient woodlands made Shooters Hill a fantastic ambush spot for highwaymen.
The development of Shooters Hill began in the 18th century and covered both slopes. As a result, today's property scene is a mixture of spectacular Victorian villas, 1930s semi-detached houses and the occasional 1960s estate.
Nearby Royal Herbert Pavilions is a fine restoration of a former military hospital transforming Royal Herbert Hospital into a luxury development of apartments. The woodland on Shooters Hill avoided housing development in the 20th century.
London County Council acquired control over the area, making it available to present and future generations as public open spaces. Landmarks Severndroog Castle, Jack Wood and Oxleas Wood were also included in the council's protection later on, and you can view them now in their most natural state. It is also part of the Green Chain Walk. Many primary, secondary and grammar schools in Shooters Hill cater to educational and cultural needs.
Ofsted ratings have been largely positive, with many schools attaining 'good' and 'outstanding' scores. The Shooters Hill Sixth Form College also offers a wide range of subjects and facilities to maximise a fantastic student-life experience for its attendants. Shooters Hill Golf Club first opened as a three-hole course in 1903. In 1907 an entire 18-hole course was designed. Today the golf course provides a tough challenge for golfers.
Shooters Hill has excellent connections. Many TFL bus services connect it with Woolwich in SE18, Eltham, Greenwich, Bexley, Thamesmead, Lewisham in SE13 and Crystal Palace. The closest rail links to the area are Welling and Falconwood railway stations offering frequent services into London.
