Elephant & Castle as a place to live
Elephant & Castle forms part of the London Borough of Southwark and is a vibrant urban regeneration area. Located south of the River Thames, the area takes its name from an 18th-century coaching inn. Interestingly, an Elephant & Castle named pub can be found today on Newington Causeway.
Modern-day transport options are plentiful, the area is serviced by Transport for London Buses, and the Zone 1 & 2 Elephant & Castle Underground Station is served by Northern and Bakerloo line trains. These connections allow speedy, regular journeys into The City and West End. Thameslink and South Eastern Trains currently service Elephant & Castle Station into Blackfriars Station.
Historical places of interest, such as the distinctive Michael Faraday Memorial centred at the old Elephant & Castle roundabout, the Imperial War Museum on Lambeth Road and the Cinema Museum are also close. The area was severely hit during WWII, with much of the area suffering bomb damage. Like many other London areas, Elephant & Castle saw vast post-war regeneration, building and community development.
Today Elephant & Castle benefits from the ongoing regeneration of the new town centre and the emergence of the Elephant Park development. These exciting programmes will significantly improve the town centre itself, including residential homes.
And improvements to rail and underground stations, and around 170,000sq ft of retail, café and restaurant space alongside community leisure spaces. Wide-ranging property styles are found across the area from many periods of building and development, representing most eras right up to the present day and the exciting development of the aforementioned Elephant Park. Developed by Lendlease, it will create approximately 2,500 properties with completions ongoing until approximately 2025. The development’s ecologically friendly credentials will breathe new life into the area and see numerous new green recreational areas that retain mature trees alongside hundreds of new ones; the centrepiece is The Park itself.
Lendlease says they are committed to ensuring that Elephant Park is one of the world's most environmentally sustainable urban regeneration projects and is a participant in the Climate Positive Development Programme. The overall goal is that Elephant Park will be climate positive when it reaches completion in 2025. Constructed in phases, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments are now available.
Exclusive new developments, area regeneration, historic-iconic architecture, fantastic transport links and varied property styles suit many budgets, making Elephant & Castle a popular choice.
